A group of seven alleged individuals of Germany's left-wing extremist group stand trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Recently, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany claim the network was responsible for targeting sites in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and urged the government in Berlin to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
